Story of Lord Ganesh's birth

One day Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva's beloved wife, instructed Lord Shiva's attendant Nandi not to let anyone                  into the palace while she was taking a bath.

A little later, Lord Shiva arrived and wished to enter.

Nandi was in a dilemma, as how to stop his master.
He told his master that Goddess Parvati had instructed not to allow any one to enter into the palace.

But he couldn't stop him and Lord Shiva entered inside
,and Goddess Parvati was in the bathroom and was                   not ready to receive him.

She was upset and wondered why Nandi had not
obeyed her command.
She complained about Nandi to Lord Shiva, but
Lord Shiva did not take the matter too seriously.
Rather he was amused to hear that Goddess Parvati had asked Nandi to stop him from entering his own home.

Goddess Parvati was annoyed. And thought that she has no
Gana who will follow her orders, all the other Ganas
considered Lord Shiva as their true master.

So Goddess Parvati came up with an idea to create a Gana who would owe his first allegiance to Goddess Parvati and not to Lord Shiva

So,Goddess Parvati gathered the saffron paste that
she used at the time of bathing from her own body and created a boy. The boy was handsome and strong.
Goddess Parvati gave the boy life and she was very happy to
see the boy and hugged him dearly.
And named him GANESH.

"You are my son, my very own son, I do not have anyone else to call my very own" said Goddess Parvati.
Then Goddess Parvati gave Lord Ganesh a staff and asked him to guard the door, "Do not to allow any one to enter without my permission."

Story of Lord Ganesh's elephant head

A little later Lord Shiva arrived near the palace and
wondered who the boy could be and why was he there.

His attendants did not know either. As Lord Shiva approached
the door, Lord Ganesh stopped him.

Lord Shiva tried to explain to Bal Ganesh that he was Goddess Parvati's husband and he had the right to enter the house without
asking any one.

Bal Ganesh said without hesitation,
"Halt, no one can enter the house  without my mother's
permission."
When Lord Shiva ignored Ganesh
Bal Ganesh hit him with his staff. Lord Shiva was furious.
Lord Ganesh tried to fight, the young boy to realize that he
was not an ordinary boy.

Lord Shiva asked his attendants to capture Ganesh, but single-handedly,Bal Ganesh defeated all of them.

These news soon reached Goddess Parvati through her friends and she thought, "Lord Shiva is after all my husband."

But she instantly argued, "But why should he try to force himself in without giving respect to the my privacy?"

So she firmly conveyed her feelings to her friend, and she took the message to the boy, "Goddess Parvati has given definite instruction as not to allow any one to enter the palace.

The boy declared, "I am the son of Goddess Parvati. I will give my life to carry out my mother's orders.
But no one can enter the palace without my mother's permission."

The messenger returned to Lord Shiva and humbly informed him what the boy had said. Lord Shiva's pride was hurt.

Lord Shiva was so angry that he sent his entire army to capture
the boy,the Bal Ganesh.Goddess Parvati called for her other powers,Goddess Kali and Goddess Durga.
She asked them to stand beside her son.

Lord Shiva's army lost the battle and the attendants ran for their
lives. Lord Shiva then called Lord Vishnu to join him in
defeating the small Ganesh

This was not a fair fight. While the boy was engaged in
fighting with Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva threw his Trident and beheaded Bal Ganesh. After the head rolled off, Lord Shiva realized his mistake.

When Goddess Parvati heard of the unfair fight she decided to
destroy the world.

Lord Brahma humbly approached to Goddess Parvati, seeking for
mercy to save the world.

Goddess Parvati agreed on two conditions, "My son must regain his life and he shall be worshipped before any of the other gods.

" By that time Lord Shiva had calmed down and apologized for
his rash behavior. And he agreed to bring Bal Ganesh back to life.

He asked his attendents to go North and bring the head of
the first creature that crossed their path. The attendents
left with the party and soon brought back the head of a
strong elephant.

The head was then fitted to the body of Bal Ganesh and
Lord Brahma sprinkled water on it.

Ganesh came to life with an elephant's head on his
shoulder. Goddess Parvati embraced her son with joy.
She then turned to Lord Brahma to fulfill her second condition.

Lord Indra and the other gods brought Lord Shiva to
Goddess Parvati.
Lord Shiva apologized for his arrogance and declared
"Hence on, this valiant boy will be my son.
He will be respected as any other God and will be
worshipped before any other God.
He will be called Lord Ganesh, the chief of my Ganas or
attendants, and also Vigneshwar, the remover of all obstacles.
